Non-stop erosion by River Brahmaputra near Maijan area in Dibrugarh is posing a major threat to the 180-year-old Dibrugarh town. On Tuesday the erosion caused major damage to the embankment along the Brahmaputra. The District administration is undertaking restoration measures on emergency basis to control the erosion.

As per the latest reports, the Water Resource Department has constructed around 50 metre length “Dowel Band” with Geo Bag at the erosion site to restrict river water flow. Further heightening work of the “Dowel Band” will continue throughout the night today. As per the Water Resource Department officials, if the river water level doesn’t rise, then the situation is said to be under control as of now.

The Deputy Commissioner, Dibrugarh, Biswajit Pegu, ADC Biswajit Phukan and other officials visited the site little while ago.

“The situation is vulnerable but, the good part is that the water level started falling. We have managed to control situation with some immediate measures. Now, we will be able to take some more measures.” – said DC Biswajit Pegu.

“There is nothing to panic, we are working round the clock. The situation is under control” – said Harish Baruah, SDO, West Sub-Division, WRD.
