Prominent Socio Educational Welfare Association (SEWA) organized a ceremonial COVID Relief distribution function on Monday at Garden Treat Hotel, Dibrugarh to commemorate the 88th Birth Anniversary of Late Shanti Gogoi, Founder President of SEWA and mother of former CJI Ranjan Gogoi. Under COVID relief distribution, a multi-purpose financial assistance of Rs 3000 each has been provided to 80 COVID affected families of Dibrugarh Urban, selection of which has been made by following a due diligence process with the help of Health Department. Further, another 80 poor and vulnerable families were also given Dry food ration and hygiene

kits. Earlier under the same programme, 4000 beneficiaries were also served cooked food at Assam Medical College Hospital. Todays’s ceremonial relief distribution programme was chaired by Sri Partha Pratim Boiragi DDC Dibrugarh.

Among other dignitaries present, the function was also graced by Sri Ranjan Gogoi Ex CJI and his wife Smti Rupanjali Gogol, Dr Nagen Saikia Former President of Axom Sahitya Sabha, and Nandita Hazarika, President of SEWA.

On the occasion of the 88th birth anniversary of late Smt Shanti Gogoi, Founder President SEWA eminent citizens of Dibrugarh viz Dr Raji Konwar Ex Principal of DHSK College, Dr Nazrana Ahmed, Senior Advocate and Chairperson of ATPA, Dr Partha Ganguly Asst. Prof DHSK College recalled her excellent leadership qualities and the numerous initiatives taken under her guidance for a better future of the marginalised sections of the society. Her contribution towards the upliftment of society was fondly remembered.

Partha Pratim Boriagi DDC Dibrugarh in his Chief Guest speech paid glowing tributes to Late Shanti Gogoi and recalled her sterling qualities of head and heart. He spoke of her as a visionary who in the year 2000 formed the Socio Educational Welfare Association (SEWA) and worked towards the upliftment of poor and vulnerable communities in order to make this world a better place to live in. He also appreciated the initiatives taken by SEWA during the outbreak of the COVID pandemic

Dr Nagen Saika Former President of Axom Sahitya Sabha also spoke on the social work activities initiated by Late Shant Gogoi and her contribution in the literary field where she authored four books. Her work for empowering women through her organisation SEWA was also recalled as well as her home-maker qualities which brought her the Labanya Hazarika Adarsha Matri Award in 2013.

During the meeting, SEWA also announced its COIVD Emergency Response programme where SEWA will provide Rs 7500 as financial assistance to 52 poor and marginalized farmers to revive their farm activity during the upcoming Rabi season.

270 poor and marginalized women farmers will also be provided financial assistance and be collectivised to overcome the adverse economic impact caused by the pandemic. Apart from this 30 women will be trained for babysitters service. SEWA also targets to provide psychosocial support to 4000 COVID impacted tea plantation workers in Assam. The SEWA COVID Emergency Response Programme is supported by Give2Asia USA.

In connection with the birth anniversary day of Founder, SEWA announced the launching of SEWA WASH project which will construct 400 toilets and 87 water points for the tea estate workers in Assam with support from TWININGS.

Arfan Hussain Vice President of SEWA, hosted the meeting and offered thanks to Give2Asia for supporting SEWA in COVID Emergency Relief Programme and also offered thanks to Dibrugarh District Administration for providing support in SEWA COVID Emergency Response work
