Mahadeo Jalan, a name which was at one time synonymous with Assam Tea, at the age of 86 years old breathed his last in Dibrugarh on 23rd July, 2021. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condoled the passing away of Jalan. In a condolence message he said, “Saddened by the passing away of prominent tea planter & social worker of Assam Sri Mahadeo Jalan. He died at Dibrugarh in the wee hours of today. Jalan ji’s contribution to Assam’s economy and society will always be remembered. My condolences to the bereaved family.

Mahadeo Jalan’s life was dedicated to tea and to the welfare of the community at large. An experienced hand at tea, he knew the ins and outs of the industry and was instrumental in bridging the gap between the government, the workers and the management. Also as a philanthropist, he has most notably donated land for key iconic locations in Dibrugarh such as the Jagannath temple, the indoor and outdoor sport stadiums, the Murleidhor Jalan bus stand, various naamghars and many more such locations. Also as an astute satistician and with keen interest for politics, Shri Mahadeo Jalan was well loved by members of all political parties who would often come to him for advise and suggestions.

Shri Mahadeo Jalan, born in Tinsukia on 24th November 1935, spent most of his life in Dibrugarh and then the later part of his life in Kolkata. Fittingly he was back in Dibrugarh for his last few months, where he spent most of his productive life.
