Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan on behalf of the citizens of Dibrugarh requested/wrote an application to the respected Central Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw Ji to close down the Dibrugarh Town railway Station(DBRT) and diversion of trains to New Dibrugarh Railway Station at Banipur (DBRG). The Dibrugarh Town Railway station (DBRT) was established in 1882 and is the oldest station in Northeast India but in present times the railway tracks running through the town and the roads built adjacent to them cause constant traffic jams, accidents and inconvenience to commuters, students, patients and general public. And a large number of Educational, Financial and Religious institutions are located in the KC Gogoi path which is only 5 metres wide and about 100 years old. The railway track has limited the widening of the road running parallel to the railway track.

“For the greater convenience of the people I (we) gave an application to close down the old station and considering the heritage value of the Dibrugarh Town railway station it can be converted into railway museum cum heritage complex,” MLA said.
