Union minister of state for petroleum and natural gas Rameswar Teli on Friday inaugurated a state-of-the-art solid waste management project at Lekai, Thakurthan in the outskirts of Dibrugarh town. Built at a cost of Rs 75.03 crore on a 28.3-hectare plot of land under the Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Program (AUIIP), the mega facility had the capacity to convert 100 metric tonnes per day
(TPD) of waste into compost. Moreover, diesel, granules and plastics will also be produced from the plant.
According to an official estimate, the 22 municipal wards of the town produce around 80 metric tonnes of solid waste
every day. These wastes till now were being dumped in an unscientific manner at the Maijan ghat along the Brahmaputra river flowing beside Dibrugarh town.
In 2017, the state government had started the work of the project at Lekai, 5-km away from Dibrugarh town under the Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Program.
