Vehicles of all categories in Assam will now have to be driven within six speed-limit slabs approved by the state cabinet on Monday to make commuting safer and minimise the risk of accidents.

According to speed capping, only light vehicles with capacity up to eight passengers can travel with the maximum speed, which is up to 100 km/hour on four-lane highways. But on national and state highways, these category of vehicles cannot cross a speed limit of 70km/hour.

The highest capping on speed is on roads within municipal areas, which means all vehicles in this category of roads will have to move at the slowest speeds. Passenger-carrying motor vehicles cannot travel at a speed more than 60km/hour on these roads while goods vehicles will have to move slower at 40km/hour. Two-wheelers within municipal areas cannot be driven at more than 50km/hour speed while three-wheelers have to move at a speed up to 40km/hour only.

The speed of transport motor vehicles carrying more than eight passengers is capped at 80 km/hour on four-lane highways, 70 km/hour on national and state highways and 60km/hr on municipal roads.

Similarly, medium and heavy motor vehicles carrying more than nine passengers from now on also cannot travel faster than 80km/hour on four-lane highways, 70 km/hour on national and state highways and 60km/hour on municipal roads.

The speed limit of goods-carrying vehicles has been fixed at 70km/hour on four-lane highways and 60km/hour on national and state highways.

Two-wheelers can travel fastest on four lanes but only up to a speed of 80km/hour and up to 60 km/hour on national and state highways. Three-wheelers cannot travel more than a speed of 50km/hour on four-laned roads and other highways.
