In a bid to ensure road safety and curb traffic violations, the Dibrugarh police have initiated a massive drive against drink driving and other traffic offenses ahead of the New Year. Led by Superintendent of Police Shwetank Mishra and other senior officials, the police have been conducting rigorous enforcement drives on the major thoroughfares of Dibrugarh town since past one week. The intensified drive against traffic offenses in Dibrugarh comes at a crucial time, with the approach of the New Year celebrations.

Providing an update on the overall traffic situation in Dibrugarh, SP Shwetank Mishra on Saturday said that as many as 42,639 instances of various traffic violations have been recorded in the district since January 1, 2023. In order to address the severity of the situation and deter reckless behaviour of drivers, 231 driving licenses have been canceled due to severe traffic rules violations during the period.

The SP also appealed to the residents of Dibrugarh to strictly adhere to traffic rules, especially during the holiday season, when the number of vehicles on the road tends to increase.

“The current drive is being carried out to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of commuters during the festive period. We are mainly targeting drink driving, overspeeding and helmetless driving. We want to send a strong message to drivers and motorists about the importance of responsible behaviour on the roads. Everyone should wear helmets, obey speed limits and refrain from driving under the influence of liquor,” the SP said.
