Gunjan with former Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal

Biman Bora, the accused in the sensational 2013 Gunjan Sharma kidnapping case was injured in police firing in Kanjikhowa, Chabua in the early hours of Wednesday.Biman Bora is accused in several robbery, kidnapping, car lifting cases across upper Assam. He has been admitted at the AMCH. Police has recovered a pistol and live ammunition from the spot.

On December 4, 2013, 14-year-old Gunjan Sharma, a daughter of a businessman and a class 8 student at the Kendriya Vidyalaya, Nazira in Sivasagar district was abducted in a school van by Biman Bora alongwith 10 other school children in Sivasagar’s Simaluguri town. 
After the abduction in broad daylight, Gunjan pleaded with the gunman to take her hos8tage and let the other children go even as he fired three rounds to keep off the people chasing him and forced the driver, at gunpoint, to turn the van towards Nagaland. The criminal who had kidnapped the children to facilitate his escape to Nagaland allowed the others to leave and took Gunjan hostage. The next morning Gunjan was found at Bihubhor, near the Assam-Nagaland border, where the gunman had freed her. In recognition of her bravery, Gunjan was conferred the first state bravery award by the then Tarun Gogoi government in 2014. The award comprised of Rs 2 lakh, a citation and a memento. In 2015 she was conferred the Geeta Chopra award by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on January 24.
