Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain will face former world champion Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals of the women’s welterweight (69kg) competition at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. The bout will start at 8:48 AM Indian Standard Time (IST) on Friday, July 30.


A win in the last eight will assure the boxer of a medal at Tokyo 2020. Ranked third in the world in the 69kg category, Chen Nien-chin is seeded fourth at Tokyo 2020. Lovlina Borgohain is ranked fifth.
After receiving a bye in the opening round, the 23-year-old Lovlina Borgohain beat Germany’s Nadine Apetz by a 3:2 split verdict at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena in the round of 16 on Tuesday. Both Lovlina Borgohain and Nadine Apetz are two-time world championships bronze medallists.


Chen Nien-chin, meanwhile, defeated 2019 world championships silver medal winner Angela Carini 3:2 in her round of 16 bout.

Lovlina Borgohain vs Chen Nien-chin: Head to head

Chen Nien-chin, the 2018 welterweight world champion, has faced Lovlina Borgohain thrice before and won on all three occasions.


The two first faced off at the 2018 world championships semi-finals where Chen Nien-chin registered a comfortable 4-0 win en route to the title.
The next bout was in 2019 at the Strandja Memorial boxing tournament in Sofia where Chen Nien-chin won by unanimous decision in the semis.
Chen’s third win over the Indian came in the quarter-finals of the Asian Championships later that year when Chen Nien-chin once again humbled Lovlina Borgohain 5-0.
