The victim of the sensational Dhemaji machete attack, Nandita Saikia succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday after battling for her life for five days. She was undergoing treatment at the Brahmaputra Hospital in Dibrugarh where she breathed her last at around 1.10pm. 


On August 21, Nandita Saikia, a BA third-semester student of Moridhal College in Dhemaji district was attacked in a fit of rage by one Rintu Sarma, a library assistant of the college, with a machete for rejecting his marriage proposal. His family had reportedly gone to the victim’s house in Naba Kathbaru village in Dhakuakhana a few days ago with a marriage proposal which was turned down by the girl. The accused also attacked the victim’s classmate injuring her severely.
In a video that is doing rounds on social media, the accused with a bloodied machete can be seen confessing to what he did without any remorse. He was arrested by the police the same day.


Widespread protests have broken out in various parts of the state seeking justice for the victim and stringent punishment for the accused. On Tuesday, students of Moridhal College had carried out a protest against the heinous attack in Dhemaji town.
