Dibrugarh has lost a prominent figure in the journalism community as senior journalist and staff reporter of Bengali daily Dainik Jugasankha, Sanjib Nandy, passed away on Monday morning at around 8.30 am. Nandy, aged 59, was admitted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) after suffering a massive brain stroke at his residence on January 8. Despite undergoing treatment, including a brain operation on January 18, his condition did not improve. He is survived by three elder sisters and a large number of admirers.

Born on January 20, 1965, in Dibrugarh, Nandy received his early education at the Bengali High School, Dibrugarh and completed his graduation in Commerce from DHSK Commerce College, Dibrugarh.

Nandy had been working as a staff reporter for Dainik Jugasankha and had been involved in the journalism profession since 2002, starting his career at Samay Prabha, a Bengali daily newspaper.

Aside from his journalistic pursuits, Nandy was an active member of various social and cultural organisations, including the India Club and Theatrical Institution in Dibrugarh. He was also passionate about theatre and had acted in numerous dramas across the state.

Nandy’s final rites were conducted at the Chowkidinghee crematorium on Monday afternoon. The news of his passing was met with grief by the media fraternity, with the Dibrugarh Press Club and the Greater Dibrugarh Press Club expressing their condolences. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan also paid their respects to the esteemed journalist.

“The loss of senior journalist Sanjib Nandy has undoubtedly left a void in the field of  journalism. His contributions to journalism and his active involvement in various cultural organisations have garnered him respect and admiration from everyone. His passing is not only a loss for his family and friends but also for the entire community he has served diligently over the years,” Union Sarbananda Sonowal Minister said in his condolence message.
