A mob of street vendors led by one Madan Shah on Saturday made a brazen attack on the personal vehicle of Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan while he was leaving after attending a board meeting of the Dibrugarh Municipal Board. The vendors also physically attacked the ward commissioner of Municipal ward no 5 Dibyajyoti Hazarika and tore his t-shirt. The vendors also tried to attack Dibrugarh Municipal Board Chairman Dr Saikat Patra and vice chairman Ujjal Phukon for their continuous drive against illegal street vendors who have been obstructing the footpaths of Dibrugarh town.
The Dibrugarh Municipal Board has provided vending zones to the vendors on selected places but some of the vendors refuses to shift to the vending zones. Meanwhile an FIR has been filed against Madan Shah and others who were involved in the attack. The municipality has threatened to cease work if the culprits are not arrested within 24 hours.
