Three Assam Rifles jawans and one civilian were arrested by the police from Jokai area of Dibrugarh town on Thursday night while transporting a consignment of drugs. Superintendent of police Shwetank Mishra on Friday said that a team of Dibrugarh police led by additional SP Bitul Chetia intercepted the accused while they were passing through Dibrugarh in two vehicles. They were travelling from Dimapur to Tinsukia for a drug rendezvous and search on their vehicles led to the recovery of  269 grams of heroin. The arrested persons were identified as Ranjit Kumar Singha of 23 Assam Rifles, Binay Kumar of 16 Assam Rifles, Junush Khan of 7 Assam Rifles and a civilian Pezslhoulie Rupreo. The two vehicles- Bolero AS07-L-4096 and Tata Xenon NL-11- 2673 – have been seized by the police.  A case has been registered against them at Dibrugarh police station under section 22(c), 27A and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. 

“The accused were supposed to deliver the drugs to a person in TInsukia. We are investigating the backward linkages and trail of the drug source and more arrests are expected. The seized contraband is worth around Rs 1 crore,” a senior police official said..

Another top police official  said that the arrested Assam Rifles jawans may have been working as a “drug mule” for some drug traders. Drug mule  is a term used for human couriers who carry drug consignment  on behalf of the drug traders.for monetary benefits.
