Kusum Sharma, a renowned teacher of Don Bosco School, Dibrugarh has entered the poll ring for the Dibrugarh Municipal Board election that is scheduled on March 6. Sharma who has been teaching since last 23 years at Don Bosco School, Dibrugarh has thrown her hat in the poll ring as an Independent candidate in ward no -16 of the 22-ward Dibrugarh Municipal Board. She is contesting on the “Tree” symbol. Ward no-16 that includes areas like Mahalaya Road, Jhalukpara, Graham Bazar, Police Reserve and Bapuji Path is going to witness a 5-way contest among Kusum Sharma (IND), Mamun Gogoi Mitra (BJP), Jeuti Mech Shah (INC), Kunti Singh (AAP) and Seema Kumari Rajak (IND). The ward no -16 has 3,817 voters.
Though the battle for ward no -16 is going to be tough one, Kusum Sharma is confident of putting up a good show. She said that her inmense good and support among the local residents will help her in sailing through the election.
“I have been teaching students for the last 23 years which is also a kind of social work. Now I would like to expand the ambit of my work among the people. People of my ward and my well wishers prevailed upon me to contest for the municipal election. If I’m elected from the ward, my primary task will be to ensure cleanliness of the small and big drains in the area. People residing in Mahalaya Road, Graham Bazar, Police Reserve and Bapuji Path have to face waterlogging problem during the rainy season due to unclean and clogged drains. Streetlights are also not available in some of the neighbourhoods and a section of beneficiaries have not received the government schemes. These things have to be sorted out. People also face immense traffic problem while passing through Jhalukpara road which is the connecting road between Mancotta road and HS Road. There are several shopping malls beside the road. We have also the Tibetan market. With the consensus of the people and the district administration the Jhalukpara road can be converted into a one-way road that will solve the traffic congestion,” Kusum Sharma said.
