The turn out in the Dibrugarh Municipal Board election was recorded at 55.68 pc in 21 of the 22 wards where polling was held on Sunday. However the percentage is likely to increase after the final tally. Polling was held in 21 out of the 22 wards after a BJP candidate won uncontested from ward no 1 after the lone rival candidate withdrew from the contest earlier.
Earlier in the day, union minister of ports, shipping & waterways and AYUSH,Sarbananda Sonowal cast his vote at the Sahityarathi Lakhsminath Bezbaruah Sahitya Sabha Bhawan polling station in Dibrugarh under ward no 4 of the Dibrugarh Municipal Board. The 22 wards of Dibrugarh Municipal Board has a total of 1,19,473 electorates out of which 58,779 are male voters and 60,694 are female voters. The district administration had set up 130 polling stations for the civic body poll out of which 56 polling stations were declared sensitive.
According to polling officials, the total turnout was recorded at 55.68 % till 4pm on Sunday when polling came to a close. Ward wise, the turnout of voters were as follows – ward 1 (uncontested winner), ward 2 (47%), ward 3 (52%), ward 4 (54%), ward 5 (37%), ward 6 (50%), ward 7 (60%), ward 8 (57%), ward 9 (63%), ward 10 (67%), ward 11 (62%), ward 12 (58%), ward 13 (60%), ward 14 (58%), ward 15 (50%), ward 16 (53%), ward 17 (68%), ward 18 (56%), ward 19 (52%), ward 20 (56%), ward 21 (58%), ward 22 (66%).
Apart from the uncontested winner from ward 1, there are 80 candidates in the contest for the remaining 21 municipal wards whose fate will be decided on March 9 when counting take place. Partywise the BJP had contested in all the 22 seats, followed by the INC in 19 seats, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Aam Admi Party (AAP) in 8 seats each. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has put up candidates in 4 seats while there are 20 independent candidates
